NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF PERU PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Jorge Luis Valdez Carrillo, the new Permanent Representative of Peru to the United Nations, presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan today.

Prior to taking up his new position, Mr. Valdez was his country's Deputy Minister, Secretary-General for Foreign Affairs. Before that, he served, in the Peruvian Foreign Ministry, as Director-General of Bilateral Policy; Director- General of International Economic Affairs; and Director-General of Multilateral Policy.

He has served as Ambassador of Peru to the Republic of South Africa; as Minister in the Peruvian Embassy in the United States; as Minister Counsellor in the Peruvian Mission to the United Nations; as Counsellor at the Peruvian Embassy in Venezuela; as First Secretary in the Peruvian Embassy in Argentina; and as Second Secretary in the Peruvian Embassy in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Valdez graduated from Pontificia Catholic University, after which he studied at the Diplomatic Academy of Peru, and then the University of London (University College).

Mr. Valdez, who was born in Lima on 12 January 1951, is married.
