SECRETARY-GENERAL APPALLED BY AMBUSH OF JORDANIAN PEACEKEEPERS IN SIERRA LEONE
20000630The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary- General Kofi Annan:
The Secretary-General is appalled to learn that United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) troops from the Jordanian contingent were ambushed today near Mile 91, in an attack which left one peacekeeper dead and four wounded.
The Secretary-General expresses his deepest condolences to the family of the victim and to the Government of Jordan, and he offers his hope for the speedy recovery of those wounded.
The Secretary-General reiterates the United Nations commitment to assisting the people of Sierra Leone to achieve lasting peace in their country.
