SECRETARY-GENERAL GRATIFIED TO LEARN OF RELEASE OF 21 UNITED NATIONS MISSION IN SIERRA LEONE (UNAMSIL) PERSONNEL

20000629

The following statement was issued today by the Office of the Spokesman for the Secretary-General:

The Secretary-General is gratified to learn that the 21 UNAMSIL military personnel who had been detained at Pendembu (Sierra Leone), have been released with the assistance of President Charles Taylor of Liberia, and have been transferred to Monrovia. They are due to be transported tomorrow to Freetown where they will be debriefed and will receive any medical assistance required.

The Secretary-General, who has been in contact with President Taylor regarding the situation of United Nations personnel detained in Sierra Leone, hopes that this welcome step will be followed by the immediate and unconditional freedom of movement of the UNAMSIL personnel who still remain surrounded by the Revolutionary United Front in the area of Kailahun.
