ON UN'S BEHALF, SECRETARY-GENERAL CONGRATULATES PRESIDENT OBASANJO ON FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF NIGERIA'S RETURN TO DEMOCRACY

20000530

Following is the text of Secretary-General Kofi Annan's congratulatory message to President Obasanjo of Nigeria, delivered on 29 May:

On the auspicious occasion of the first anniversary of Nigeria's return to democracy, and your inauguration as President, I send you the warm congratulations and best wishes of the United Nations.

The successful return to representative democratic government in the continent's most populous country is a significant landmark in Africa's quest for political stability and economic progress.

I continue to follow with keen interest your strong personal commitment to the promotion of democracy in Africa, and all that you are doing to revive the Nigerian economy and restore integrity and sound leadership within Nigeria. We wish you every success in these difficult but important endeavours.

Allow me to also salute Nigeria's continuing pivotal role in efforts to achieve peace and stability not only in Sierra Leone and in West Africa, but in Africa as a whole.
