SECRETARY-GENERAL DEPLORES AMBUSH SLAYING OF TWO JOURNALISTS IN SIERRA LEONE
20000524The following statement was issued this evening by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:
The Secretary-General was saddened by the news out of Sierra Leone today that two journalists were killed and two more were injured in an ambush launched by suspected members of the Revolutionary United Front.
These were professionals, seeking to report on a bloody conflict that has already taken too many lives. They were doing what other journalists are doing around the world - taking risks so that the rest of us can keep informed. The message that they uncovered in Sierra Leone is that the killing has not stopped.
The Secretary-General calls for an end to the senseless violence that is tearing Sierra Leone apart.
