STATES PARTIES TO LAW OF SEA CONVENTION NOMINATE OFFICERS

20000523

The States parties to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea met this afternoon to hear nominations for the four Vice-Presidents on its Bureau, as well as its Credentials Committee.

Peter Donigi (Papua New Guinea), the President of the tenth meeting, announced that China, Guatemala, Indonesia, Malta, Nigeria, Portugal, Slovakia, South Africa and Uruguay were nominated for the Credentials Committee.

The representative of the Russian Federation, on behalf of the Eastern European Countries, nominated the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia for the slot of Vice-President.

The President then announced that the Credentials Committee would meet from 3 to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, 25 May.

He said that the establishment of a trust fund, called for by the United Kingdom, had been included in agenda item 14: “Other Matters”, as had a document presented by Chile. Under the same agenda item, The Seamen’s Church would address the meeting.

He added that the Report of the External Auditors for the financial year 1999 of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea had been received in the English language only. The Meeting decided to take up the Report of the External Auditors for the financial year 1999 during this Meeting.

The representative of France regretted having just the English version, but he said that in this instance, substance was more important than form.

The States Parties to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea will meet again at 10 a.m. Wednesday, 24 May.
