NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF ETHIOPIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

The new Permanent Representative of Ethiopia, Fisseha Yimer, today presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
Prior to his present appointment, Mr. Yimer was Ethiopia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva from 1996 until the present, and from 1992 to 1996 was Ethiopia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Vienna.
Mr. Yimer served as Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs in the Ethiopian Government from 1990 to 1991, and was Head of the Legal Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1977 to March 1990.
Before that, from 1972 to 1977, he was Lecturer and later Assistant Professor of public international law at the School of Law of Addis Ababa University, where he was also Deputy Dean from 1974 to 1977. In 1975 he sat as Judge on the High Court of Ethiopia.
From 1970 to 1971 he was a legal expert in the Office of the Auditor-General of the Ethiopian Government.
Born on 2 August 1940, Mr. Yimer holds a Master's degree in Law from the University of Pennsylvania.
He is married with two children.
