NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF BAHAMAS PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Anthony Charles Rolle, the new Permanent Representative of the Bahamas to the United Nations, presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan today.

Prior to his current appointment, he served as a consultant to his Government on privatization and e-commerce development. In 1994, he was appointed Parliamentary Secretary at the Ministry of State for Health Services, and the year before that he served as Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Public Works and Local Government. In 1992, following his election as a Member of Parliament, he was appointed Parliamentary Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister and became Co-Chairman of the Hurricane Relief Committee following the devastation caused by Hurricane Andrew.

Mr. Rolle began his career as a Senior Planning Engineer at the Bahamas Electrical Corporation in 1969. In 1978, he joined British-American Insurance Company of the Bahamas, Ltd, as Manager of its computer department. In 1980, he received a fellowship in Life Insurance Management from the Life Office Management Association of the United States, and in 1981-1982 he served as a Senator in his country's Senate. In 1982, he became President of British-American Insurance Company of the Bahamas. In 1988, he became a Regional Vice-President of the parent company, British-American Insurance Co., Ltd.

Mr. Rolle holds a Master's degree in Business Administration from the University of Miami, and a diploma in Electrical Engineering from Portsmouth College of Advanced Technology, Hampshire, England.

Born on 29 June 1945, Mr. Rolle is married with three children.
