FREETOWN RELATIVELY CALM AS SIERRA LEONE MISSION CONSOLIDATES, AWAITS REINFORCEMENTS
20000515The following statement was issued on Saturday, 13 May, by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:
Freetown is gradually returning to relative calm. The United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone must now consolidate and reinforce itself so it can continue its efforts to bring lasting peace to that troubled country.
The arrival of troops from the United Kingdom, even for a limited period, has had a positive impact. The impending arrival of troops from Bangladesh, India, Jordan and eventually from other West African States will further stabilize the country.
The Secretary-General is grateful to those nations that have offered troops to the United Nations peacekeeping mission, and praises their resolve and exemplary commitment.
The past week has been difficult for the force on the ground. But the Secretary-General would like to pay special tribute to the United Nations Force Commander, Major General Vijay Jetley, and those serving under his command, for their performance and their determination to carry on with their mandate despite an adverse and fast-moving situation.
The Secretary-General also wishes to recognize the bravery of the men and women of the United Nations Mission, both civilian and military, who are working to fashion a better future for the people of Sierra Leone.
