SECRETARY-GENERAL ASKS SPECIAL ADVISER ON CYPRUS TO DEFER DEPARTURE FROM HEADQUARTERS, APPOINTS NEW CHIEF OF MISSION OF UNFICYP
20000512The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary- General Kofi Annan:
I would like to announce that the Secretary-General has asked Alvaro de Soto, his Special Adviser on Cyprus, to remain based at United Nations Headquarters for the time being, in order to give priority to the good offices effort under way.
Further, I would like to inform you that the term of James Holger, as the Secretary-General's Acting Special Representative and Chief of Mission of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), comes to an end on 31 May 2000. In this connection, he has appointed Zbigniew Wlosowicz (Poland) to succeed Mr. Holger as Acting Special Representative and Chief of Mission, effective 1 June 2000.
The Secretary-General has written to the President of the Security Council in this regard.
