SPECIAL MEETING ON SECURITY, DEVELOPMENT IN CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC TO BE HELD AT HEADQUARTERS 15-16 MAY
20000510NEW YORK, 10 May (Department of Political Affairs) -- A special meeting on security and development in the Central African Republic will take place on 15 to 16 May in New York. This meeting aims at mobilizing donor assistance in support of the programmes of the Central African Republics Government relating to the restructuring of the armed forces and the demobilization and reintegration of military personnel, in accordance with paragraph 5 of Security Council resolution 1271 (1999).
The meeting is co-sponsored by the United Nations - the Department of Political Affairs and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) -- and the Permanent Mission of Germany. The Prime Minister of the Central African Republic, Anicet-Georges Dologuele, will lead the Government delegation.
Given that security-related programmes must be anchored within the Governments overall social and economic strategy, including poverty alleviation, the meeting will focus on the most critical aspects of this strategy, which also require the attention and support of the international community.
This integrated approach to security and development is in line with the report of the Secretary-General on the causes of conflict and the promotion of durable peace and sustainable development in Africa, presented to the Security Council and the General Assembly over two years ago.
This meeting, which is organized in close collaboration with the Government of the Central African Republic and the Bretton Woods institutions, will bring together interested Member States, the Organization of African Unity, the European Commission, the International Organization of la Francophonie, regional and international financial institutions, international non-governmental organizations, as well as relevant United Nations departments, programmes and agencies.
