SECRETARY-GENERAL PLEASED BY AGREEMENT IN EAST TIMOR CONCERNING JUDICIAL, HUMAN RIGHTS MATTERS

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary- General Kofi Annan:

On this, the first anniversary of the massacre at Liquica, the Secretary- General was pleased to learn of the conclusion yesterday of an agreement between the United Nations mission in East Timor and the Indonesian Government on mutual cooperation concerning judicial and human rights matters. This agreement will facilitate the working together of the United Nations and Indonesia on investigations and prosecutions of those responsible for last year’s violence in East Timor.

The Secretary-General wishes to express his appreciation to President Abdurrahman Wahid and Attorney General Marzuka Darusman for taking this important step in meeting their obligations to bring about justice for the crimes committed in East Timor.
