SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS MAJOR-GENERAL FRANCO GANGUZZA (ITALY) AS UN TRUCE SUPERVISION ORGANIZATION CHIEF OF STAFF

Secretary-General Kofi Annan has announced the appointment of Major- General Franco Ganguzza of Italy as Chief of Staff of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO). He will take over the command of UNTSO from Major-General Timothy Ford of Australia, who will end his tour of duty on 31 March.

Major-General Ganguzza was born in 1943. He was commissioned as an officer in 1965 and has held his present rank since 1 July 1998. He has held a variety of appointments, including command of an artillery battalion and of a mechanized brigade. His present appointment is Deputy Commander, Military Region South, in the Italian Armed Forces. He also served as Chief Operations Officer at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) headquarters in Naples, supporting NATO forces in Bosnia (1996-1999), and as Deputy Commander, Albania Force, in 1999.
