NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF ANGOLA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Jose Gonçalves Martins Patricio, the new Permanent Representative of Angola to the United Nations, presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan today.

Prior to his present appointment, Mr. Patricio served as his country's Ambassador to Portugal from July 1995. Before that, he was Angola's Ambassador to the United States from 1993 to 1995.

He served as Ambassador in the Observer Mission of Angola to the Organization of American States (OAS) from 1991 to 1995. From 1989 to 1992, he was Information Secretary in the Office of the President of Angola.

Mr. Patricio was a member of the Angolan Government delegation to the 1990 and 1991 peace negotiations that led to the signing of the Bicesse Peace Accords in May 1991.

From 1974-1989, he held, successively, the positions of Chief Editor, Head of the Information Department, and Head of the Programming Department at National Radio of Angola.

While performing his diplomatic duties, Mr. Patricio contributed articles to a number of newspapers in Angola, United States and Portugal. He served as the Executive Secretary of the Union of Angolan Journalists.

He has a degree in journalism from the Belgrade University School of Journalism, as well as a post-graduate degree in Political Marketing from the Independent University of Lisbon, Portugal.

Mr. Patricio, who is 45, is married with three daughters.
