UN UNIVERSITY SEMINAR ON KOSOVO CRISIS AND INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY TO BE HELD AT HEADQUARTERS 21 MARCH

NEW YORK, 29 February (UNU) -- The United Nations University will host a one day seminar devoted to “The Kosovo Crisis and the International Community” on Tuesday, 21 March 2000, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 6 p.m. in Conference Room C at United Nations Headquarters.

The seminar will provide the setting for an assessment of the military, diplomatic, political and humanitarian aspects of the Kosovo crisis. Papers will be presented containing interpretations from various perspectives, including the conflicting parties, NATO allies, the immediate region surrounding the conflict and further afield. They will also discuss country perspectives, the role of the United Nations and the longer normative, operational and structural consequences of the conflict.

Speakers will include: Agon Demjaha (Kosovar Civil Society, Federal Republic of Yugoslavia); Duska Anastasijevic (Vreme, Federal Republic of Yugoslavia); Ibrahim A. Karawan (University of Utah, United States); Monica Serrano (Centro de Estudios Internacionales at El Colegio de Mexico, Mexico); Lt. General Satish Nambiar (Ret., Indian Army, India); Felice Gaer (Jacob Blaustein Institute for the Advancement of Human Rights, American Jewish Committee, United States); A.J.R. Groom (University of Kent, United Kingdom); Air Marshal Ray Funnel (Royal Australian Air Force, Ret., Australia); James Mayall (University of Cambridge, United Kingdom) and Lori F. Damrosch (Columbia University, United States).

The project is coordinated by Ramesh Thakur, Vice Rector, United Nations University, and Albrecht Schnabel, Programme Officer, United Nations University.
