NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF POLAND PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Janusz Stanczyk, the new Permanent Representative of Poland, presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan today.
Before assuming his post, Mr. Stanczyk was his country's Under-Secretary of State responsible for legal and economic affairs and for Poland's relations with international organizations. He was also responsible for Foreign Ministry contact with the Sejm and the Senate (the two parts of Poland's bicameral legislature). From 1995 to 1997, he was the Foreign Ministry's Director General for Legal Affairs, and from 1992 until 1995 he served as Director of its Legal and Treaties Department.
Mr. Stanczyk holds a Ph.D from the Institute of Legal Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences, having previously studied at the Jagiellonian University, and St. Louis University and the University of Michigan in the United States. From 1978 to 1992 he was a scholar at the Historical and Legal Institute of the Jagiellonian University and the Institute of Legal Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
From 1992 until 1996, and again from 1998 to 2000, he was a member of Poland's delegation to the General Assembly.
Mr. Stanczyk, who is 45 years old, is married with two children.
