NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF VIET NAM PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

The new Permanent Representative of Viet Nam, Nguyen Thanh Chau, today presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
Prior to his present appointment, Mr. Nguyen was the Director of the International Organisations Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hanoi. From 1992 to 1996, he served as his countrys Ambassador to Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and Fiji.
From 1987 to 1992, Mr. Nguyen he held a number of positions with the Viet Nam National Commission for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), including that of Deputy Secretary-General. From 1983-1986, Mr. Nguyen served as Second Secretary at the Permanent Mission of Viet Nam to the United Nations in New York.
Mr. Nguyen received a Master of Arts degree in education from the Australia National University in Canberra, Australia. He also received a diploma in education from the Canberra College of Advanced Education. Mr. Nguyen spent several years lecturing for the Institute for International Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hanoi. From 1971 to 1974, he studied English and International Law in Budapest, Hungary.
Born in Phu Tho on 17 September 1945, Mr. Nguyen is married with two children.
