20000218

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary- General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General continues to be seriously concerned at the high level of tension affecting South Lebanon, which has the potential for further destablization of the already very fragile situation. He reiterates his call to all parties to exercise restraint and, in particular, to respect the non- combatant status of civilians. The Secretary-General hopes that all parties will redouble their efforts to achieve measureable progress in the peace process.
