NEW REPRESENTATIVE OF IAEA DIRECTOR GENERAL TO THE UNITED NATIONS

VIENNA, 15 February (IAEA) -- The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) wishes to announce that Kwaku Aning has been appointed as the Representative of the Director-General of the IAEA to the United Nations and as Director of its Office at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Mr. Aning assumed his duties on 1 February 2000.

Mr. Aning has held several posts at the United Nations in New York and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development in Geneva since 1977. His assignments included: Secretary of the Organizational Committee of the Administrative Committee on Coordination (1998-2000); Secretary of the United Nations Committee on Science and Technology for Development (1995-1998); Regional Coordinator for Elections in Angola United Nations Angola Verification Mission (UNAVEM II) and Deputy to the Humanitarian Assistance Coordinator in Angola (1992-1993); and Secretary of the Preparatory Committee of the United Nations Conference on Science and Technology for Development (1978-1979). Mr. Aning has also worked on several United Nations technical cooperation projects on technology policy issues, in particular information and communication technologies.

Mr. Aning obtained his doctorate degree in Metallurgical Engineering from Columbia University; his master's degree in Solid State Physics from Princeton University; and his bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (summa cum laude) from the University for Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana.

Mr. Aning has edited two books on information and communication technologies and published several articles in scientific and technical journals.

A citizen of Ghana, Mr. Aning was born in 1946. He is married to Arafua Apaloo and has three daughters.
