SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS HANS BLIX OF SWEDEN EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN OF UN MONITORING, VERIFICATION AND INSPECTION COMMISSION

The following statement by Secretary-General Kofi Annan, announcing the appointment of Hans Blix, was issued today by his Spokesman:

This afternoon, I received a letter from the President of the Security Council, United States Ambassador Richard Holbrooke, advising me that the Security Council has formally approved my nomination of Hans Blix of Sweden. In accordance with Security Council resolution 1284, which established the United Nations Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC), I am pleased to announce that Mr. Blix is appointed Executive Chairman of UNMOVIC. I expect Mr. Blix to take up his mandated tasks as soon as possible. Mr. Blix's appointment will formally take effect upon his assumption of duties.
