SPECIAL ADVISER FOR ASSISTANCE TO COLUMBIA VISITS COLOMBIA 17-20 JANUARY

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary- General Kofi Annan:

Jan Egeland, Special Adviser to the Secretary-General for International Assistance to Colombia, visited Colombia from 17 to 20 January on his second official mission to the country. The Special Adviser held meetings with President Andres Pastrana, the Foreign Minister, as well as other Cabinet members. He also conducted meetings, for the first time, with the Commander-in-Chief of the Revolutionary Armed Force of Colombia (FARC), Manuel Marulanda. The Special Adviser expressed the international community’s desire to support peace and national reconciliation through social, humanitarian, human rights, and crop substitution activities in Colombia. During his meeting with the President and with Mr. Marulanda, he was encouraged by the desire expressed by the parties to advance in negotiations.
