RESTORATION OF TWO CULTURAL SITES ON CYPRUS TO BE UNDERTAKEN BY UNDP IN PARTNERSHIP WITH UNITED STATES

20000117

The following statement was issued today by the Office of the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

I am pleased to announce that following discussions in Cyprus with the relevant institutions on both sides, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with the United States, has undertaken the first phase of a project to restore two highly significant cultural sites on the island. These are the Apostolos Andreas Monastery in northern Cyprus and the Hala Sultan Mosque in southern Cyprus. The project's implementation will be entrusted to the United Nations Office for Project Services.

I consider this a very constructive step forward, one well suited to the spirit of the New Year.
