NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF MALAWI PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

The new Permanent Representative of Malawi to the United Nations, Yusuf McDadlly Juwayeyi, today presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Prior to his appointment, from 1992, Mr. Juwayeyi served as his Government’s Commissioner for Culture. From 1989 to 1992, he was Director of Antiquities in Malawi’s Department of Antiquities. Also in that Department, Mr. Juwayeyi served as Senior Antiquities Officer (1979-1989) and Antiquities Officer (1973-1979).

From 1993 to 1994, Mr. Juwayeyi, who holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology, was Professor of Anthropology at Hunter College in New York, New York. During the same period, he served as External Examiner of Archaeology at the University of Dar es Salaam, United Republic of Tanzania. Among other academic positions held, Mr. Juwayeyi was Senior Lecturer in African Prehistory, University of Malawi, Chancellor College, from 1988 to 1993.

Mr. Juwayeyi’s international activities include service as his country’s delegate to the twenty-ninth General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Paris in 1997, and as delegate to the Diplomatic Conference on Copyright in Geneva in 1996. In 1992, he was Malawi’s delegate to the Ministerial Conference on Culture and Information in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Region of Southern Africa, which was held in Maputo, Mozambique.

Mr. Juwayeyi earned his Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1981, and his Master’s degree from that University in 1976. He also holds a degree in history and sociology from the University of Malawi.

Born on 30 July 1950, Mr. Juwayeyi is married with three children.
