19991214

The Department of Public Information (DPI) is to conduct a live video- conference later this week on preparations for next year’s United Nations Millennium Assembly and Summit, and the Millennium Forum. It will take place on Thursday (16 December), in the Dag Hammarskjöld Library Auditorium, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. (EST).

The multi-point video briefing will focus on three key United Nations meetings highlighting the Organization’s agenda for the year 2000 and beyond. In September there will be the General Assembly's Millennium Assembly and the Millennium Summit, which is expected to be the largest single gathering of heads of State ever held.

The Millennium Forum, a companion event being organized by non- governmental organizations at the request of Secretary-General Kofi Annan, takes place at United Nations Headquarters in New York from 22 to 26 May 2000.

Taking part in Thursday’s event will be representatives of non- governmental organizations assembled in New York and at the United Nations offices in Geneva and Vienna, as well as at the Resource Center for the United Nations, a non-governmental organization in San Francisco. They will engage in an exchange of information with the New York panellists, including Assistant Secretary-General Miles Stoby, Coordinator for Preparations for the Millennium Assembly of the Executive Office of the Secretary-General; the Permanent Representative of the Republic of South Africa to the United Nations, Dumisani Shadrack Kumalo; Techeste Ahderom, Co-Chair for the Millennium Forum, and Estelle Perry, Treasurer of the Millennium Forum.
