SECRETARY-GENERAL, AWARE OF HONDURAS-NICARAGUA TENSIONS, CALLS FOR PEACEFUL RESOLUTION TO CONTROVERSY

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General is aware of tensions raised between Nicaragua and Honduras after the ratification by the Honduran National Assembly on 30 November of the “Lopez-Ramirez” Treaty with Colombia. The Secretary-General is following the issue closely and has called on all parties concerned to continue their efforts to seek a peaceful resolution of this controversy. The United Nations is ready to provide any assistance that the parties may deem necessary.
