NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF MARSHALL ISLANDS PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Jackeo A. Relang, the new Permanent Representative of the Marshall Islands to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Prior to his appointment, from 1996, he served as his country's Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

From 1990 to 1996, Mr. Relang served as Undersecretary for Regional/International Institutions and Programmes at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Marshall Islands. In this position he was responsible for coordinating training programmes, seminars, workshops and financial assistance offered by the United Nations and pacific region agencies.

Mr. Relang started his career as a teacher in 1982 in the Marshall Islands Ministry of Education. From 1982 to 1985, he taught at several elementary level schools. He then became an education specialist, writing and developing social study curricula from 1985 to 1987. In 1988, Mr. Relang became principal of an elementary school. From 1989 to 1990, he served as the Director of the Regional and Model Schools Pilot Programme.

Mr. Relang holds a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science from Brigham Young University in Hawaii. He also received a certificate from the Asia-Pacific Security College in Hawaii. Throughout his career in education, he participated in numerous projects, including a community-based governance project. He received specialized training from the Micronesian Diplomatic Training Programme and the National Foreign Service Institute.

Born in 1955, Mr. Relang is married with six children.
