STATEMENT ATTRIBUTABLE TO THE SPOKESMAN OF THE SECRETARY-GENERAL

The following statement was issued by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan on 26 November:

The Secretary-General notes the conclusion of the meeting of the organizing committee for an emergency Loya Jirga, or Grand Assembly, which was held in Rome from 22 to 25 November at the initiative of the former king of Afghanistan, Mohammad Zahir Shah. The United Nations and a number of interested countries sent their representatives to observe the meeting.

The Secretary-General hopes that this initiative and other initiatives taken by the people of Afghanistan will contribute to the return of peace to Afghanistan.
