19991122Palestinian Rights Committee To Hold Solemn Meeting
NEW YORK, 22 November (Division for Palestinian Rights) -- A solemn meeting of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People will be held on Monday, 29 November, in observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.
Invitations to address the meeting have been extended to the President of the General Assembly, the Secretary-General, the President of the Security Council, a representative of Palestine, the Chairman of the Special Committee to Investigate Israeli Practices Affecting the Human Rights of the Palestinian People and Other Arabs of the Occupied Territories, several intergovernmental organizations, and a representative from non-governmental organizations accredited to the Committee.
All Member States and observer States have been invited to attend the meeting and forward messages of solidarity from their head of State or government, which will be announced during the meeting. All United Nations family organizations, observers and non-governmental organizations are also invited to attend. The proceedings, including the text of all the messages received on the occasion, will be reported in a special bulletin of the Division for Palestinian Rights of the United Nations Secretariat.
The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People is observed annually in accordance with General Assembly resolution 32/40 B, adopted in 1977.
On the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity, the Committee is presenting an art exhibit entitled Follow the Star: Images from the Palestinian City of Bethlehem at the New Millennium, which will open at 6 p.m. on Monday, 29 November, and will be on display until Sunday, 12 December, in the Public Lobby of the General Assembly building.
In addition, the Committee has arranged for the screening of two films entitled "Yoom ilak, Yoom aleik: Palestinian Refugees from Jerusalem, 1948: Heritage, Eviction and Hope", and "Mahmoud Darwish: As the Land is the Language." Both films will be shown at the Dag Hammarskjöld Library Auditorium at 1 p.m. on Monday, 29 November. The film on Mahmoud Darwish can be viewed at the exhibit area from 30 November to 10 December.
