From 1987 to 1991, he was Ambassador to France. He was appointed the Director-General of the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1991, the post from which he retired in 1994. Since his retirement, he continued his activities in multilateral diplomacy including at the Organization of African Unity (OAU) Conflict Resolution Mechanism, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Most recently, Mr. Adeniji has been serving as the Secretary-General's Special Representative for the United Nations Mission in the Central African Republic (MINURCA).
