The following statement was issued on 12 November by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General was shocked and deeply saddened by the news of the fatal air crash in Kosovo.

Once again, men and women of many nationalities have had their lives cut short in the service of the United Nations, on a mission to bring relief to the suffering and peace to a war-torn community.

Their colleagues will remember them with great sorrow and affection. The Secretary-General extends his deepest sympathy to the loved ones they have left behind.
