GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO TAKE UP FINANCING OF UNITED NATIONS OBSERVED MISSION IN SIERRA LEONE; FIFTH COMMITTEE WILL REVIEW

19991101

Observing Minute of Silence, Members Express Sympathy to Victims Of Cyclone in India, Crash of Egyptair Flight 990 off Massachusetts

The General Assembly this afternoon decided to include in its agenda an item on the financing of the United Nations Observer Mission in Sierra Leone (UNOMSIL) and allocate it to the Fifth (Administrative and Budgetary) Committee. It had before it a note by the Secretary-General (document A/54/234) requesting the inclusion of the item entitled “Financing of the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone” in the Assembly’s agenda for this session. Owing to the nature of the item, the Secretary-General further requested that it be allocated to the Fifth Committee.

Before the adoption of the text, the President, Theo Ben-Gurirab (Namibia), expressed on behalf of the Assembly his deepest sympathy to the Government and people of India for the tragic loss of lives and the extensive damage that had resulted from the recent cyclone. Also expressing deep sorrow and profound sympathy, he extended condolences to the bereaved families, relatives and friends of all those on board Egyptair Flight 990 which had crashed off the coast of Nantucket Island in Massachusetts on 31 October. The Assembly then observed a minute of silence in remembrance of the victims.

The President informed the Assembly that on Thursday (4 November), it would take up agenda item 52 on the “Question of the Falkland Islands (Malvinas)”. It would also that day consider item 157 -- Report of the Committee on Relations with the Host Country -- on the remaining appointment from among the Asian States to that committee.

The General Assembly is scheduled to meet on Wednesday (3 November) at 10 a.m. to hold elections to fill vacancies in principal organs, and to elect eighteen members of the International Court of Justice.
