CHRISTINE B. KOERNER APPOINTED DIRECTOR OF UNITED NATIONS INFORMATION CENTRE IN HARARE, ZIMBABWE

Secretary-General Kofi Annan has appointed Christine B. Koerner, a national of Germany, as Director of the United Nations Information Centre in Harare, Zimbabwe. She is expected to take up her duties on 1 November.

Prior to her appointment, Ms. Koerner worked as Senior Editor at the Yearbook of the United Nations, where she served as Deputy Chief Editor and was responsible for editing complex chapters on political and security questions, as well as legal issues, and administrative and budgetary matters.

In 1989, Ms. Koerner participated in supervising the registration of voters and the elections in Namibia, and helped actively promote acceptance of the vital role the United Nations played in that process. Ms. Koerner was also involved in monitoring elections in both Cambodia and South Africa.

Before beginning her service with the United Nations, Ms. Koerner was a freelance writer on international affairs and worked as a researcher at the University of Munich, Germany, on political and social developments in Southeastern Europe.

Born and educated in Grafenau, Germany, Ms. Koerner holds a Ph.D. in communications from the University of Munich.
