SECRETARY-GENERAL DEPLORES MILITARY COUP IN PAKISTAN, URGES EARLY RESTORATION OF CIVILIAN RULE

19991013

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General deplores the military coup in Pakistan. Although the intentions of those who perpetrated it are still unclear, the Secretary-General does not believe that coups are the way to solve a country’s problems. He urges Pakistan’s military leadership to take early measures to restore civilian rule and the constitutional process. The Secretary-General hopes that the current crisis will not exacerbate the already tense situation in the region.
