SECRETARY-GENERAL HAILS PEACEFUL CONDUCT OF PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION IN CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General has noted the announcement by the Constitutional Court of the Central African Republic of the results of the first round of the presidential election in that country. He wishes, once again, to acknowledge the peaceful and responsible manner in which the people of the Central African Republic have participated in this event. He hopes that the Government and opposition will find the best way to work together, in a spirit of national reconciliation, towards the consolidation of peace and development in the country.
