NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF FIJI PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

19991005 Biographical Note

Amraiya Naidu, the new Permanent Representative of Fiji to the United Nations, presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan today.

Prior to his current appointment Mr. Naidu was his country’s Permanent Secretary for Education, a position he had occupied since 1993. Between 1990 and 1993 he had served as Deputy Secretary for Education.

Mr. Naidu started his career in 1966 as a teacher of chemistry and mathematics, and later served as principal of three secondary schools. He was promoted as a Divisional Education Officer in 1988, and the following year appointed to act as Chief Education Officer.

Born in Fiji in 1941, Mr. Naidu attended his country’s Nasinu Teachers’ College and Andhra University in India, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree. He is married and has two sons.
