MONGOLIA JOINS STANDBY ARRANGEMENTS FOR PEACEKEEPING OPERATIONS
19990927Mongolia today became the twenty-eighth country to sign a memorandum of understanding on the standby arrangements for the United Nations peacekeeping operations.
The signing ceremony took place in the Office of the Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations. The Permanent Representative of Mongolia to the United Nations, Jargalsaikhany Enkhsaikhan, signed the memorandum on behalf of his country; the Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Bernard Miyet, signed it for the United Nations. Mongolia's contributions to the Standby Arrangements System include military observers, staff officers and medical personnel.
The other 27 countries that have signed the memorandum are: Argentina, Austria, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ghana, Ireland, Italy, Jordan, Kyrgyz Republic, Lithuania, Malaysia, Nepal, Netherlands, Nigeria, Pakistan, Paraguay, Romania, Singapore, Tunisia, Ukraine, United Kingdom, Uruguay, Zimbabwe.
To date, 86 countries have officially expressed their willingness to participate in the standby arrangements designed to accelerate the deployment of peacekeeping operations.
