IVO PETROV APPOINTED SPECIAL REPRESENTATIVE OF SECRETARY-GENERAL FOR TAJIKISTAN
19990921Secretary-General Kofi Annan announced today the appointment of Ambassador Ivo Petrov of Bulgaria with effect from 20 September 1999, to succeed Jan Kubis as Special Representative for Tajikistan. Mr. Kubis relinquished his post on 21 June 1999 to become Secretary-General of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
Mr. Petrov is at present the Head of the Department for European Integration in the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He has held this position since September 1998. Mr. Petrov was also responsible for the preparation of Bulgaria's participation in the Stability Pact for South-Eastern Europe.
From 1993 until his present appointment, Mr. Petrov was Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Republic of Bulgaria to the United Nations Office in Vienna, the OSCE and other organizations. Mr. Petrov served as head of the office in charge of Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Sofia, and participated in the Helsinki Follow-up Meeting in 1992. Mr. Petrov entered the Bulgarian diplomatic service in 1974, and graduated from the Diplomatic Academy in Moscow in 1984. From 1986 to 1990, he served in the Bulgarian Embassy in Bonn.
Mr. Petrov was born in 1948.
