PHAKISO MOCHOCHOKO OF LESOTHO ELECTED CHAIRMAN OF SIXTH COMMITTEE
19990914 Biographical NotePhakiso Mochochoko, who was elected Chairman of the Sixth Committee (Legal) of the fifty-fourth session of the General Assembly this afternoon, is the Senior Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of Lesotho.
Positions he has held at the United Nations include Vice-Chairman of the Sixth Committee at the fifty-third session of the General Assembly, and Vice-Chairman of the Special Committee on the Charter of the United Nations and on the Strengthening of the Role of the Organization.
He was also Vice-Chairman of the Committee of the Whole of the 1998 Rome United Nations Diplomatic Conference of Plenipotentiaries on the Establishment of an International Criminal Court and Chairman of its Working Group on International Judicial Cooperation. He served as a member of the Lesotho delegation to that conference, and to the Preparatory Commission for the Court which was established after it. Mr. Mochochoko contributed a chapter to the book, The International Criminal Court: The Making of the Rome Statute, which was published this year.
Born on 4 September 1957 in Lesotho, Mr. Mochochoko was educated at the National University of Lesotho where he obtained the degrees of Bachelor of Arts in 1982 and Bachelor of Laws in 1984.
He practised law in Lesotho until 1992. He joined the Community Law Centre of the University of Natal (Durban), South Africa, and worked in its human rights programme. He was Regional Coordinator of the Lawyers for Human Rights Paralegal Training Project.
Mr. Mochochoko is married and has three children.
