SOTIRIOS ZACKHEOS OF CYPRUS ELECTED CHAIRMAN OF FOURTH COMMITTEE
19990914 Biographical NoteSotirios Zackheos, Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the United Nations, was this afternoon elected Chairman of the Fourth Committee (Special Political and Decolonization). He has previously chaired the Committee on Relations with the Host Country.
Before his November 1997 appointment to New York, Mr. Zackheos was Permanent Representative at the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva (April 1996 to October 1997).
Mr. Zackheos has held several senior Foreign Ministry posts, including Director of Political Affairs (1995) and Director of Economic Affairs (1993). He served as his country's first resident Ambassador to China (1989-1993), with concurrent accreditation to Japan, Pakistan, Philippines and Mongolia. He was Counsellor at the Cyprus Embassy in Moscow between 1979 and 1985.
Born in Nicosia on 24 January 1950, Mr. Zackheos received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Athens and a Masters Degree in Political Science from Stanford University.
He is married and has two children.
