VLADIMIR GALUSKA OF CZECH REPUBLIC ELECTED CHAIRMAN OF THIRD COMMITTEE
19990914 Biographical NoteVladimir Galuska, who this afternoon was elected Chairman of the Third Committee (Social, Cultural and Humanitarian) for the fifty-fourth session of the General Assembly, has served as the Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic to the United Nations since April 1997. He also served from that time until January 1998 as President of the Economic and Social Council.
Prior to his United Nations appointment, Mr. Galuska served for three years as Director of Personnel in his countrys Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Prague, also serving as Deputy Chief of Mission at the Czech Embassy in Washington, D.C. He served as Acting Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic to the United Nations from January to June 1993. Prior to that, from July 1991 to December 1992, Mr. Galuska was Political Counsellor of his countrys Embassy in Washington D.C., after having served there as Consul (1990-1991).
Mr. Galuska began his career by serving as Legal Counsel to the Skoda Praha Enterprises for 10 years, followed by five years as head of the Skoda Praha Legal Department. He holds a Juris Doctor degree from Charles University in Prague, with a concomitantly completed course of postgraduate study in commercial and administrative law.
Born in 1952, Mr. Galuska is married and has two sons.
