RAIMUNDO GONZALEZ OF CHILE ELECTED CHAIRMAN OF FIRST COMMITTEE
19990914 Biographical NoteRaimundo Gonzalez, who was this afternoon elected Chairman of the First Committee (Disarmament and International Security) for the General Assembly's fifty-fourth session, is Director of Special Political Affairs (Disarmament and International Security) in Chile's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Mr. Gonzalez was Vice-Chairman of the First Committee during the Assembly's fifty-third session and is a member of the Secretary- General's Advisory Board on Disarmament Affairs. He is Vice-Chairman of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) and was Vice- Chairman of the Third United Nations Conference on the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNISPACE III) held in Vienna from 19 to 31 July 1999.
In 1989, Mr. Gonzalez served as Adviser to the Director of Special Politics in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1994, he was appointed Ambassador to Romania.
Having begun his career in 1984 as Professor of International Law at the University of Chile, Mr. Gonzalez has taught and lectured in outer space law and international law in Brazil, Argentina, Spain and the United States.
He holds degrees in law, political and social sciences from the University of Concepcion and the Catholic University of Santiago, both in Chile.
Born in Concepcion in 1939, Mr. Gonzalez is married.
