19990913

The following was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today reappointed Carol Bellamy, the Executive Director of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), to a second five-year term as head of the agency.

“Over the past four-and-a-half years Ms. Bellamy has served with distinction and devotion”, the Secretary-General said in making the reappointment. “The world’s children will most certainly benefit from her continued leadership of this vital organization.”

Since her original appointment in May 1995, Ms. Bellamy has worked to increase visibility and support for the millions of children around the world. She has also carried out important management reforms within UNICEF to increase financial oversight, while decentralizing operations to assure continued effective delivery of assistance to children around the world.

Ms. Bellamy’s reappointment takes effect on 1 May 2000, at the conclusion of her present term.

The UNICEF operates in more than 160 countries worldwide, helping governments and civil society provide for and protect the health, education and general well- being of children and women. It has an annual operating budget or roughly $1 billion.
