ACTIVITIES OF THE SECRETARY-GENERAL IN CANADA, 2-3 SEPTEMBER

19990907

The Secretary-General travelled to Canada in the afternoon of Thursday, 2 September to Canada, where he attended the Eighth Francophonie Summit, which took place in Moncton, New Brunswick.

On Friday morning, the Secretary-General was one of the speakers addressing the participants on the subject of youth. In his speech entitled “Youth and the Dialogue among Civilizations”, he reminded the young people of the world, to whom the summit was dedicated, that the message he wanted to pass on was to learn, practice and cultivate the universal language of peace, justice, liberty and solidarity. “Cherish your individuality, respect the individuality of others and always look for what you have in common rather than for what divides you”, he said. “It is up to each and every one of you to nurture this dialogue among civilizations “ (See Press Release SG/SM/7118).

The Secretary-General returned to New York that afternoon.
