NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF KENYA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

19990907 Biographical Note

Phares Michael Kuindwa, the new Permanent Representative of Kenya to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to Secretary- General Kofi Annan.

Before taking up his present appointment, Mr. Kuindwa was Permanent Secretary, Secretary to the Cabinet and Head of the Public Service from 1996 to 1999. Between 1992 and 1996, he served as Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Vice-President and Ministry of Planning and National Development.

Mr. Kuindwa’s previous government service also included appointments as Senior Under-Secretary in the Office of the President (1986 to 1991) and Senior Economist/Head of Project Appraisal and Monitoring in the Ministry of Economic Planning and Development (1983).

Born in Kenya's Coast Province in September 1949, he was educated at the University of Nairobi, the University of Dar-es-Salaam and the University of London.

Mr. Kuindwa is married.
