GENERAL ASSEMBLY PRESIDENT GREATLY SADDENED BY TRAGIC LOSS OF LIFE AND EXTENSIVE MATERIAL DAMAGE CAUSED BY EARTHQUAKE IN TURKEY

Following is a statement of the President of the fifty-third session of the General Assembly:

Didier Opertti (Uruguay), General Assembly President, has followed with utmost concern the dramatic consequences of the recent devastating earthquake in Turkey. He is greatly saddened by the tragic loss of human life and extensive material damage caused by this natural calamity. He would like to express his deepest condolences to the Government of Turkey, as well as to the families of the victims, and calls upon the international community to extend all possible humanitarian assistance to alleviate the effects of this disaster.
