SECRETARY-GENERAL WELCOMES DECLARATION BY UNITED TAJIK OPPOSITION OF DISBANDMENT OF ITS ARMED FORCES

19990804 The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary- General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General welcomes the formal declaration by the United Tajik Opposition of the disbandment of its armed forces. This marks a significant step forward in the peace process and opens the door to the lifting of the ban on United Tajik Opposition political parties and mass media, in accordance with the peace agreement.
