UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE IN MONGOLIA NEXT WEEK WILL REVIEW REGIONAL DISARMAMENT ISSUES

19990728

NEW YORK, 28 July (Department for Disarmament Affairs) -- A regional disarmament meeting entitled "Security Concepts in the Changing World" is to be held next week in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

The purpose of the conference, from 3 to 5 August, is to provide an informal setting for frank and candid discussions of pressing security issues and concrete disarmament measures. With this in mind, the meeting will deal with several important issues, including: definition of security today; how to respond to common challenges; security concepts in Asia and the Pacific; nuclear-weapon-free zones; and Mongolia's international security and nuclear-weapon-free status.

The conference is organized by the Department for Disarmament Affairs through its Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific, in close cooperation with the Government of Mongolia.

About 40 participants from governments, academic and research institutes, non-governmental organizations, elected representatives and the media, mainly from within the Asia- Pacific region, will attend in their personal capacity.
