SECURITY COUNCIL TAKES UP KINGDOM OF TONGA'S MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION

The Security Council this morning referred the application of the Kingdom of Tonga for admission to membership in the United Nations to its Committee on Admission of New Members for examination and report.

The Council was acting in response to a note by the Secretary-General (document S/1999/793), in which he circulates a letter from 'Ulukalala-Lavaka-Ata, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Defence of the Kingdom of Tonga. The letter, dated 8 July, requests the admission of the Kingdom of Tonga as a Member in accordance with the provisions of Article 4 of the United Nations Charter, and with those of rule 58 of the provisional rules of procedure of the Security Council and rule 134 of the rules of procedure of the General Assembly.

The letter also contains a declaration by the Minister pledging that the Kingdom of Tonga accepts the obligations contained in the United Nations Charter and undertakes to fulfil them.

The Committee on the Admission of New Members will meet at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, 26 July.

The meeting, which was called to order at 10:45 a.m., was adjourned at 10:50 a.m.
