PREPARATORY BODY FOR SPECIAL SESSION OF GENERAL ASSEMBLY ON WOMEN 2OOO RESUMES SECOND SESSION TO ELECT OFFICERS

19990630 In a resumed second session this morning, the Commission on the Status of Women acting as the preparatory committee for the special session of the General Assembly entitled "Women 2000: gender equality, development and peace for the twenty-first century", elected Roselyn Ruth Asumwa Odera (Kenya) as the new Chairperson of the preparatory committee.

The committee had recently been informed that its Chairperson, Irma Engelbrecht (South Africa), had assumed new responsibilities within her Government and would be unable to carry out her duties as Chairperson.

Also this morning, the committee elected Asit Bhattacharjee (India) and Misako Kaji (Japan) as Vice-Chairpersons, thus, filling the outstanding vacancies in its bureau.
