AGREEMENT REACHED BETWEEN UN AND GOVERNMENT OF IRAQ ON COMPOSITION OF TECHNICAL MISSION TO INSPECT AND CLEAN UP UNSCOM'S BAGHDAD LABORATORIES

The following statement was issued today by the Office of the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

Agreement has been reached between the United Nations and the Government of Iraq on the composition of a technical mission to inspect and clean up the Baghdad laboratories of the United Nations Special Commission on Iraq, which reportedly contain dangerous chemicals.

The mission will be conducted by independent technical experts, who will be accompanied by United Nations staff, as well as three diplomatic observers.

It is expected that the mission will be carried out in the next two weeks.
